Career Opportunities for Majors in Information Technology & Informatics

Introduction

The School of Communication and Information (SC&I) offers the major in Information Technology and Informatics (ITI). This program emphasizes the evaluation, implementation, and management of information technologies for a wide range of organizations. ITI unites theories drawn from the humanities and social sciences with practical computer-based competencies. This combination prepares students to work in a diverse marketplace that hires individuals who understand the social and economic impact of technology locally and globally, as well as the effective use of technology in organizations.

Information Technology and Informatics graduates find opportunities in a wide variety of careers in business, education, government, and nonprofit organizations. The combination of technical skills and verbal/written communication skills is a desirable characteristic employers seek when hiring. Any work that involves communication as its focal point is a potential career field for ITI majors. The information technology industry is a competitive one, however, and experience is a must.

While most graduates work in a related occupation, others choose different paths. Experience has allowed some to progress without further education. However, an advanced degree can offer an edge, particularly with larger corporations. Many careers do not require a specific major but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Regardless of your career aspirations, increase your marketability to employers through internships, related work experience, good grades, advanced coursework, and involvement in campus activities.
