Career Opportunities for Majors in Latin American Studies
Introduction
The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that includes both major and minor degrees. CLAS's mission is to promote research and knowledge-building that crosses both traditional disciplinary and geographic boundaries. As countries in the Hemisphere form regional markets, new regionalizations have begun to occur that have untold economic, political and cultural impacts. The need for a rigorous academic analysis of the present and future implications of these regionalizations is evident.
Latin American studies, in order to be salient and relevant to our needs as a multicultural society, is Hemispheric in scope. CLAS provides students with a strong grounding in Latin American history, culture, economics and language, while highlighting the ways in which globalization is impacting both the region and intellectual approaches to area studies, in general. Latin American Studies is a versatile major and helps develop skills useful anywhere. Your major is only one of many variables to be considered when developing your career plans. Many careers do not require a specific major, but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Regardless of your career choices, increase your marketability to employers through internships, responsible work experience, good grades and involvement in college activities.
